Project Title

Three-Year Business Strategy Plan for Fonterra: Balancing Farmer Value, Climate Responsibility, and Stakeholder Trust

Project Background

This project was completed as part of my academic work in business professionalism. The purpose of the project was to develop a three-year business strategy plan for Fonterra, a major New Zealand dairy co-operative, while considering professionalism, stakeholder expectations, sustainability, and long-term organisational performance.

The project focused on a real-world business issue. Fonterra operates in a complex environment where it must balance financial returns for farmer shareholders with increasing pressure from stakeholders regarding climate responsibility, sustainability reporting, and public trust. This made the case highly relevant to business professionalism because it required not only business analysis, but also ethical awareness, communication, accountability, and long-term strategic thinking.

In this section, I showcase one of my pivotal academic projects: the Three-Year Business Strategy Plan for Fonterra, which aims to balance farmer value, climate responsibility, and stakeholder trust. This initiative tackled a significant and complex business challenge in New Zealand, allowing me to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge within a practical organizational framework. I explored how Fonterra can effectively navigate issues related to sustainability, meet stakeholder expectations, and enhance long-term strategic performance, all while providing value to its farmer shareholders.

Throughout this project, I honed my skills in research, analysis, strategic thinking, and professional communication. I crafted a comprehensive three-year strategy plan fortified by SWOT analysis, SMART objectives, key performance indicators (KPIs), and risk mitigation strategies. The primary goal was to develop a strategy that was not only commercially viable but also ethically responsible. A crucial insight I gained was that a successful business strategy transcends mere performance and profit; it encompasses trust, accountability, ethical leadership, and an unwavering commitment to long-term sustainability.

Task and Challenge

The main task of this project was to develop a realistic three-year strategy plan supported by analysis, clear objectives, performance indicators, and risk mitigation. One of the key challenges was that the issue was multidimensional. It involved economic priorities, environmental pressure, organisational complexity, and reputational risk.

Another challenge was ensuring that the strategy was not only commercially realistic but also professionally responsible. This meant the project needed to address both business performance and the wider expectations of stakeholders, including sustainability concerns and long-term trust.

What I did

In this project, I researched the organisation’s strategic direction, identified its core business issue, and analysed the internal and external environment. I developed strategic objectives, linked them to measurable outcomes, and considered the importance of stakeholder trust, climate accountability, and implementation capacity.

I also worked on structuring the report clearly so that the analysis moved logically from problem identification to strategy formulation, performance measurement, and risk control. My contribution focused on making the strategy practical, well-organised, and aligned with the principles of business professionalism.

How I did it

I began by reviewing Fonterra’s organisational context and identifying the key professionalism issue. I then analysed the internal and external environment, developed strategic objectives, and proposed measurable KPIs and risk mitigation strategies. Throughout the project, I focused on connecting academic theory with practical application to ensure that the strategy was both realistic and professionally responsible.

Outcome and Learning

The final outcome of the project was a structured and realistic strategy plan that addressed both organisational performance and professional responsibility. Through this work, I improved my ability to analyse complex business issues, connect theory to practice, and think more critically about leadership, sustainability, and stakeholder trust.

This project also strengthened my understanding that professionalism in business is not only about efficiency and results. It is also about responsibility, accountability, ethical decision-making, and long-term impact. Overall, this project was an important learning experience that helped me develop both academic and professional skills.
